Meet the Keepers

Paul DesBrisay - Wildlife Educator

I am Paul, Paul I am.

Little Ray's has been a part of my life since the age of ten, when I became a member of the first generation of the Junior Herpetology Club (since disbanded, much to my chagrin). My first reptile was a corn snake named Phoenix - the best snake in the whooooooooole world and a champion Mommy at 43 babies. Corn snakes are often looked down upon because they're considered a bit mundane, but people shouldn't be ashamed if their first reptile is a corn snake because she led to a collection of around 30, including spotted pythons, panther chameleons, and an ornate horned frog.

Outside of my life in the zoo, I like to ride my bicycle, ski, adventure, and other death-defying activities. I am also an Advanced Open Water Scuba Diver, and I played competitive water polo for four years at both provincial and national levels.

My favourite thing about working at the zoo is the profound learning experience it has been for me. I have gained and augmented many skills, such as confidence in public speaking and patience - not to mention my favourite part of working here: the incredible wealth of knowledge that my co-workers at the zoo possess. There are, however, hazards of working at Little Ray's… like the time I got bit on the head by an eight-foot-long Burmese python… apparently I smell delicious…

In terms of future plans, in the fall of 2008 I'm hoping to attend either the University of Guelph or the University of Victoria - either way, I'm completing my institutional education with a major focus on Zoology. I hope to make a career out of being a man of science with a long beard and flowing robes.
